Frequently asked questions

What goes into COGS?

COGS is the cost basis assigned to the goods sold during the period under the accounting policy used by the business. Which production, labour, freight and inventory-related costs belong in that basis depends on the reporting framework and policy, so use the same classification as the underlying records.

Cost of Goods Sold

Is shipping in COGS?

Classify inbound freight, outbound fulfilment and delivery on the same accounting basis used in the business records. Treatment can vary with the cost, inventory policy and reporting framework, so this calculator does not impose a universal COGS classification.

Cost of Goods Sold

Where do I find beginning and ending inventory?

Beginning inventory is the opening inventory balance for the period and ending inventory is the closing balance on the same valuation basis. For a clean COGS calculation, beginning inventory, purchases and ending inventory must use consistent scope and valuation rules.

Cost of Goods Sold

Can COGS be negative?

The arithmetic can produce a negative result when ending inventory exceeds beginning inventory plus purchases. That is a review flag rather than a normal economic interpretation of goods sold: check period cut-off, purchases, inventory adjustments, returns, transfers and valuation before relying on the result.
