Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between gross margin and markup?

Gross margin is profit as a percentage of sale price. Markup is profit as a percentage of cost. The same profit figure expressed as a percentage gives a smaller margin reading than a markup reading — they are not interchangeable.

Gross Profit Margin

Does marketing spend count in COGS?

Whether a marketing cost belongs inside COGS or operating expense depends on the nature of the cost and the accounting policy used by the business. Use the classification in the business records and keep it consistent across periods.

Gross Profit Margin

What is a healthy gross margin?

There is no universal healthy gross-margin percentage. The useful comparison is against your own business model, product mix, accounting basis and prior periods, or against a benchmark that is genuinely comparable and sourced for your sector. MarginKoala does not insert a generic target band.

What if my revenue includes tax?

Keep revenue and COGS on a consistent accounting and tax basis. Whether tax should be included or excluded depends on the jurisdiction, entity and reporting policy. Use the basis in the business records or adviser treatment rather than applying a universal tax adjustment.
